LEADING LADIES' FAQ
Temperature:
The average temperature for late August is 75 degrees by noon.
The start of the race is usually at about 44 degrees.
Elevation:
The full marathon begins at 6,000 feet at the Lead Country Club,
and drops gently to 3,400 in Spearfish City Park.
Surface:
Mostly pavement, some gravel, 2 miles concrete bike path.
Running Protocol:
a. RUN FACING TRAFFIC ALWAYS. Cutting the tangent might save
a second; could lose a life.
b. Please, no support folks in cars or on bikes…look for them in
park and at the finish; safety first.
Travel:
Fly into Rapid City, SD…renting a car is best so you can see some
of the Black Hills. It’s 60 miles to Spearfish, SD. There is a shuttle
service from the airport; pricey but possible.
Logistics:
Buses leave from Holiday Inn (host hotel) just outside Spearfish,
Sunday morning at 4:00, (4:30 for half) and at 4:15 (4:45 for half)
from Spearfish City Park (finish line). The trolley will shuttle
finishers to the Holiday Inn every hour beginning at 9:00 am.
Boston Qualifier:
Yes! Remember the BAA has gone back to less relaxed times so
this is a great opportunity for qualifying; chip timed and fast.
Porta Potti Situation:
Many at the start, more at the half, and intermittently on the
Course; I know, never enough…trees everywhere.
Aid Stations:
About every 2 miles after the first 3.4…“manned” by USAF!
Water, PowerAde, food….Chocolate,!
Time Limit:
Course officially closes at seven hours; don’t worry about it.
Walkers:
Always welcome in all events.
NOTE: New and beautiful cut-off through the woods; same distance,
cooler running!
